Rays 3rd Generation Bistro Bakery

Tucked away in the charming town of Alton, Ontario, Rays 3rd Generation Bistro Bakery is one of those hidden gems you almost don’t want to share—except it’s way too good to keep secret. Located at 1475 Queen Street, this cozy spot blends the heart of a family-run bistro with the soul of a classic bakery, making it a go-to for locals and travelers alike.

Walk in, and you’re instantly hit with the warm, comforting aroma of home-cooked goodness. The atmosphere? Totally unpretentious—just warm wood tones, smiling faces, and the kind of buzz that only comes from food made with love. Whether you’re popping in for a quick bite or settling in for a slow afternoon meal, there’s something here that hooks you.

Let’s talk food. The French Onion Soup? Rich, cheesy, and soul-soothing—the kind of dish that wraps you up like a cozy blanket. Then there’s the Lamb Burger, juicy and tender with just the right amount of flavor kick. And don’t even think about skipping the Homemade Pot Pies—they’re golden, flaky, and packed with comforting fillings that taste just like grandma used to make.

Sweet tooth? You’re covered. The Sticky Toffee will make your eyes roll back in the best way possible, and the Chelsea Buns are soft, gooey, and basically irresistible. Everything’s made in-house, fresh, and with a serious attention to detail that you just don’t find everywhere.

There’s a real sense of legacy here—hence the “3rd Generation” in the name. You can feel it in the service, the flavors, and the way customers keep coming back. It’s not just a place to eat. It’s a place to connect, to slow down, and to enjoy food that actually feels like food. If you’re ever near Alton, Rays 3rd Generation Bistro Bakery is where your next great meal is waiting.

Food is fantastic. Especially the short ribs. The baked goods are very good as well. We have never been disappointed.

The menu has accent on Italian dishes. Which were very good. Service was a bit slow because there was only one waitress/ hostess/ cashier/retail cashier...

My favourite restaurant of all time. I have been here 5 times and have always enjoyed everything I've ordered. The chef is amazing. They are very creative with food.

A quaint little restaurant in the village of Alton. Rustic atmosphere and some of the best food I have ever experienced. Make reservations or you won't find a table. Make it a weekend getaway and enjoy the Millcroft Inn Spa and explore The Alton Mills and discover unique artisans (fine art, jewelry, clothing, etc.)and enjoy all the beautiful scenery this area has to offer.

As good as advertised, and reasonably priced! Walked over here before a concert at Alton Arts Center, and sat out on the patio. The weather was perfect. I started with a goat cheese and beet salad, which was delicious. I then got a mushroom pasta, which also ended up having goat cheese. Would have preferred Parmesan I think. It was still good. Service was wonderful, as was the ambiance. Hope to return soon!
